Introduction to Myoshinji Temple
Myoshinji is the head temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, with over 3,000 branch temples. The grounds are simply spacious.
It is a 5-minute walk from Hanazono Station. When I entered the temple grounds, the first thing I saw was the red Sanmon Gate. The building was built in 1599 and is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
Next came the Buddha Hall. Built in 1872, this building is also an Important Cultural Property. This photo was taken from the second floor when the Sanmon Gate was open to the public for a special period.
Further inside was the entrance where visitors were allowed to enter. There is a fee to enter from here, but when I entered the Hall I was able to see the famous dragon ceiling painting. The painting of the dragon was huge and very impressive.
I also entered the Ohojo, which faces the garden. It felt good to sit here and relax.
Temple experience
There was also a room for zen meditation and copying sutras.
Copying of sutras can be done all year round. Reception hours are 9:00-11:00 and 13:00-15:00.
Shukubo (temple stay)
I stayed at the Hanazono Kaikan, which is adjacent to the temple grounds. On other days, I also stayed overnight at the sub-temples Torinin and Daishinin. For more details, Please visit the link below.
