Introduction to Shimogamo-jinja shrine

Shimogamo-jinja is a shrine with a long history, first mentioned in records as far back as 90 BC. The two main buildings are designated as Japanese national treasures. In addition, 53 shrine buildings have been designated as Important Cultural Properties.

The forest within the shrine grounds covers an area of 124,000 square meters, and ancient vegetation still remains.

Enjoying Japanese Architecture

I walked along the main road through the forest and arrived at a vermilion-painted gate. It was 13 meters high. A corridor connected the east and west sides. It was a beautiful gate with a dignified appearance.

When I passed through the gate, there was a dance stage. During festivals, traditional dances are performed here.

A roof with curved edges on both sides is one of the characteristics of Japanese architecture. This will increase the durability of the roof.

Purifying Pond

On the east side of the shrine grounds is the Mitarashi Pond.

There were fortune slips where the letters would appear when you put them in water.

Here, an event is held at the end of July where people go barefoot into the pond for about 10 days. It is said that soaking your feet in water can help prevent illness.

A sacred tree for love fulfillment

Aioi Shrine has a sacred tree which is made up of two trees connected partway along. It is said to bring good luck in finding love.

There is also a shop offering amulets specializing in helping people find love.

Rugby’s sacred place

Sawata Shrine is said to grant good fortune in improving ball games. The first rugby match in Kansai was held here, making it a sacred place for the sport. There was a big rugby ball in front of the shrine.
