About Hokongoin temple

This is the site of a mountain villa built by Kiyohara no Natsuno in 830, which was later converted into a temple.
Although normally closed to the public, it is specially opened on the 15th of every month, as well as for limited periods during the cherry blossom, lotus, and autumn foliage seasons.
You can view various Buddhist statues – including the National Treasure Amida Nyorai (Amitabha) – and a Japanese garden designed to evoke the Pure Land.
The lotus flowers that bloom in July are particularly famous.
