Introduction to Shodenji temple

This temple was built in 1273 in the central part of Kyoto (near Karasuma Imadegawa) and moved to its current location in 1282. It was designated an imperial prayer temple by Emperor Go-Daigo in 1323. It was later devastated during the Onin War (1467-1477), but was restored around the beginning of the 17th century.

The blood-stained ceiling of the main hall

The main hall has a famous blood-stained ceiling. Fushimi Castle was located in the southern part of Kyoto City, but it fell in a battle in 1600. At that time, Torii Mototada, who was defending the castle, and several hundred of his subordinates committed seppuku (ritual suicide).

This blood-stained ceiling is made from floorboards from Fushimi Castle, which were installed on the ceiling as a memorial.

Other highlights

Visitors can admire the dry landscape garden that incorporates Mount Hiei as a borrowed landscape, as well as the sliding screen paintings designated as important cultural properties.
