Introduction to Kissyoin-Tenmangu shrine
Kichijoin-Tenmangu Shrine was built in 934 on the site where Sugawara no Michizane was born. Sugawara no Michizane (845-903) was a nobleman and scholar during the Heian period. In Japan, he is worshipped throughout the country as the god of learning.

Pray by passing under the golden cattle
The cattle is a messenger of Sugawara no Michizane. There is a golden reclining cattle with a hole in it in the precincts. It is said that if anyone takes the exam, they will pass if they pass through this hole.

Birthplace of Sugawara no Michizane
Within the shrine grounds are the mound containing the placenta of Sugawara no Michizane, the water he used for calligraphy, and a well into which his face is said to have been reflected.
