Introduction to Hoonin temple

Hoonin (Kyoto) Main hall

Hoonin Temple was founded in 1326. It was later burned down during war but was rebuilt in 1665.

The principal image is the Amoghapasa. Amoghapasa holds a lasso and is said to be able to capture and remove all suffering. I looked through the glass and was able to see it.

I also visited the hall where Jurojin is enshrined. A deer is sitting next to him with a calm expression on its face.

There was a shrine to Kasuga Myojin within the grounds. Here too, deer are messengers of the gods, and there was a statue of a sacred deer. The parent and child look very close and it’s a heartwarming sight.

When I visited the temple in January as part of a tour of the Seven Lucky Gods, there were a lot of people there. Amulets, votive plaques, and other lucky charms were on sale.
