About Jurinji temple
It originated in 850, when Emperor Montoku enshrined a statue of Jizo Bosatsu (Ksitigarbha) to pray for the safe delivery of Empress Somedono.
It is also known as the place where the poet Ariwara no Narihira lived in retirement. For this reason, it is called Narihira-dera.
It is said that he performed the salt-roasting ritual here, pouring his feelings for Fujiwara no Takaiko – the consort of Emperor Seiwa – into the act. The site of this salt kiln still remains today, and it is believed to bring good fortune in love.
Incidentally, Ariwara no Narihira was renowned for his good looks and was a man who had relationships with many women.
In spring, a weeping cherry tree estimated to be around 200 years old blooms magnificently in the courtyard.
