About Kosanji temple
This temple was founded in 774. In 1206, the high priest Myoe was granted the temple grounds by the Retired Emperor Go-Toba and revived the temple under the name Kosanji.
The temple houses a collection of treasures that includes eight National Treasures and over 10,000 Important Cultural Properties. Among them, the Choju-giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals) is particularly famous. This depicts, in a comical manner, the playful activities of anthropomorphized rabbits, monkeys, and frogs.
It is also said to be the birthplace of tea. Tea cultivated by the Myoe was introduced to Uji, leading to the spread of Uji tea.
