Introduction to Honpoji temple

It is one of the eight main temples of the Nichiren sect in Kyoto.
There are various theories, but it is said that Honpoji Temple was founded in 1436. After that, it moved to Osaka at one point, but in 1587 it moved to its current location.
Many of the buildings, including the main hall, founder’s hall, pagoda, priest’s quarters, and Chinese-style gate, are designated as tangible cultural properties of Kyoto Prefecture.

Also famous are the gardens created by Honami Koetsu (1558-1637) and the Nirvana painting by Hasegawa Tohaku (1539-1610).
The Marishiten (Marici) deity enshrined on the temple grounds uses a wild boar as its messenger. There are two boar statues in front of the Marici hall.
