Nanzen-ji temple
Nanzen-ji temple is the head temple of the Nanzen-ji school, Rinzai sect. It is one of the largest classes of temples in Kyoto, which ranks it above the five temples in Kyoto.
It is famous for the sanmon gate, where Goemon Ishikawa proudly said “Good view,” as he finished his impressive show, as well as the bridge gate over the water channel that lets water in from Lake Biwa.
Shukubo (temple stay)
It is about a five-minute walk from the Keage subway station. The shukubo is located on the street in front of Nanzen-ji temple.
The rooms are tatami mat rooms and separated with sliding doors. In the room where I stayed, there were folded futon mattress, a tea pot and cups on a small table, a towel and a toothbrush.
It was equipped with an oil heater and air conditioning. The bath was made of stainless steel and I was able to relax in it. With the air conditioning, the room was warm in the winter, but the facility itself was cold, especially in the morning and at night.
Breakfast
At around seven thirty in the morning, I was called for breakfast from outside the room. I prepared myself and went to the dining room in ten minutes. The breakfast was ready.
The cooked rice and miso soup were already served in bowls. The soup had cooled, but the meal was tasty in general.
The breakfast included cooked rice, natto (fermented soybeans), miso soup, cooked Kyoto vegetables, fried tofu and cooked radish. It was a modest meal, as is always the case of temple meals, but tasted good. You can have a second bowl of cooked rice and miso soup if you like.
Impression
Unfortunately, they do not provide morning religious services. It seems that a young priest is managing the lodging alone. He treated me with adequate hospitality and I was able to stay comfortably.
