Introduction to Myokenji Temple

Myokenji (Kyoto) Main hall

Myokenji Temple was built in 1321. It is one of the eight Nichiren sect big temples in Kyoto. Highlights include the approximately 200-year-old wooden buildings and gardens. It also has a history of being the lodging place of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan’s famous Sengoku (Warring States Period) warlords. It is said that if you visit the temple, your various wishes will come true.

Myokenji (Kyoto)

There was a shukubo at the back of the temple grounds. It was a wooden building that had a historic feel to it. Accommodation is limited to women only.

Plum blossoms were blooming in front of the entrance. Cherry trees and maple trees have also been planted, so I think I will be able to enjoy it in every season.

Upon entering the shukubo, there was a beautiful bamboo garden. It has been used in a TV commercial.

The room I stayed in was a 6 tatami Japanese-style room. It wasn’t very spacious, but it had a nice atmosphere with hanging scrolls.

Inside the temple, I was also able to see an authentic Japanese garden. Originally it was meant to welcome nobles. The stones are arranged to represent the waterfall flowing into the sea. Through them I was able to see the spread of Buddhism. (The photo was taken during the autumn foliage season.)

There were sword marks on the pillar that were said to have been made by a samurai.

Morning service and Breakfast

The next morning, I attended the service held in the main hall. The sound of chanting echoed throughout the main hall, providing a refreshing experience.

Afterwards I had breakfast. The menu included rice, miso soup, simmered dishes, hijiki seaweed, nori seaweed, pickles, strawberries, etc. It was simple and very delicious.
