Kansai is an area centered around Kyoto and Osaka.

Kyoto City has a variety of different types of shukubo, from the head temples of various sects to small temples. Koyasan is lined with temples that have been operating lodgings for a long time.

In other areas, you can also find accommodation at many temples and shrines.

Kyoto-City

Chisyakuin-Kaikan temple stay (Kyoto)

Chisyaku-in is the head mountain of the Chisan school of the Shingon sect. Morning service, about 50 to as many as 150 priests chanted the sutra loudly to the sound of Kei (a board like a percussion instrument), which produces a very refreshing atmosphere.

Ekoin temple stay (Wakayama)

The Shojin cuisine served in the room was really delicious. Compared with the shukubo that I stayed at on the previous day, this place was larger in scale. In terms of accommodation facilities, it was more sophisticated. Only people who wished to participated in the morning service at the main hall from 6:30.
Kyoto-City

Jokyoji temple stay (Kyoto)

Jokyoji Temple was built around 1171. It is located in downtown Kyoto. Modern accommodation facilities have been built in connection with the main hall. The next morning, I attended service. The attendees offered incense one by one. After the service, we also viewed the temple treasures in the main hall.
Osaka

Minamimido temple stay (Osaka)

Minami-Mido was founded in 1595. It is located along Midosuji Avenue, which runs north and south through central Osaka. There is an accommodation facility that combines the temple gate with a hotel. I experienced ringing the bell at 7am. The wooden striker used to strike the bell weighs 40 kg (88lbs).
Koyasan

Kongosanmaiin temple stay (Wakayama)

Tahoto tower, a national treasure, is one of the three treasure towers in Japan. Much old, historical architecture, including Kyozo (an important cultural asset), Shisha-Myojin-sha and Kyaku-den can be found here. When it comes to architecture, it is the best among the many shukubo lodgings on Mount Koya.

Shorekiji temple stay (Kyoto)

Shorekiji Temple was founded in 942. It is located in Ayabe City in northern Kyoto Prefecture. The lodgings were opened in renovated 100-year-old detached buildings. Popular activities include zazen in the bamboo forest and the experience of clearing your mind beneath a 600-year-old tree.
Kyoto

Kaizoji temple stay (Kyoto)

Kaizoji Temple was founded in 1050. It is located in the northern part of Kyoto Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan side. Accommodation is limited to one group per day. In the main hall, you can practice zazen, copy sutras, and perform morning services. The meals are Buddhist vegetarian cuisine.
Wakayama

Daitaiji temple stay (Wakayama)

Daitaiji Temple was founded 1,200 years ago. There is a shukubo within the temple grounds. There are various temple experiences available, such as Zen meditation, copying sutras, eating rice porridge in the morning, morning services, a Buddha statue viewing tour, a riverside sauna, and evening bell ringing.
Nara

Shigisan Senjyuin temple stay (Nara)

Shigisan Chogosonshi-ji temple is an old temple, which is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku (574 to 622). Senju-in is the oldest among all the temples here. The shukubo is famous for its shojin vegetarian cuisine called Teppatsu, which was very delicious.
Koyasan

Rengezyoin temple stay (Wakayama)

This is the shukubo where Yukimura Sanada lived with his family. Sanada was a warrior who played an important role in the Battle in Sekigahara and Summer and Winter Battles in Osaka, which became turning points in Japanese history. During the meal, student priests from Koyasan High School and University wait on you.
