Shukubo stay

Introduction to Konkoin Temple

Konkoin (Kyoto) temple stay

Konkoin is a sub-temple located within the grounds of Konkai-Komyoji Temple, the head temple of the Jodo sect. It is the oldest of the 18 sub-temples, with a history of over 460 years. It is located immediately to the right after passing through the huge gate of Konkai-Komyoji Temple.

The lattice doors, made by craftsmen, create a heart shape when three of them are stacked together. In Japan, this shape has long been called boar’s eye.

Making bracelet prayer beads

Konkoin (Kyoto) Making bracelet prayer beads

We participated in making prayer beads bracelets. I chose my favorite balls, made from natural stones and wood, and arranged them in a ring.

Natural stones have various powers. The jade I chose represents calmness, perseverance and helping me achieve my dreams and goals.

Morning service

The next morning, morning services were held in the main hall from 7:30. The head priest recited a sutra and we offered incense.

Buddhist vegetarian breakfast

After the morning service, we had breakfast. We had a vegetarian breakfast at Izusen, a famous vegetarian restaurant in Kyoto.

The menu included rice, soup, pickles, sesame tofu, simmered dishes, steamed dishes, mashed tofu salad, and freeze-dried tofu. The sweetly pickled plums made into tempura were enjoyable and had a unique taste.

Another unique feature of this dish is the serving dishes. They are all different sizes, so when stacked together they merge into one. This originated from something used by monks in training and was designed to be stored without taking up space.
