About Daianrakuji temple

Daianrakuji Temple (Tokyo) Main hall

This area was originally a prison compound for housing inmates. Many people were executed here, including Yoshida Shoin. He was a thinker who opened a private school and mentored figures such as Takasugi Shinsaku and Kusaka Genzui, who went on to have a major impact on modern Japanese history.

Daianrakuji Temple was built in 1875 to console the spirits of such people. The statue of Jizo Bodhisattva (Ksitigarbha) on the temple grounds has been enshrined to offer prayers for the repose of their souls.

Also, near the entrance, Benzaiten (Sarasvati) – a deity believed to bring blessings for scholarship, the arts, and business – is enshrined.
