Shukubo (temple stay)
Minami-Mido was founded in 1595. It is located along Midosuji Avenue, which runs north and south through central Osaka.
There is an accommodation facility that combines the temple gate with a hotel.
The exterior doesn’t look like a temple, but more like a high rise building in the city center.
I took the elevator up to the 16th floor and there was the front desk. There was also a lounge and a bar.
I stayed in a stylish Western-style room. There was a bath, toilet and sink. There was also a large TV, a refrigerator and a safe. Wi-fi was also available.
I had the opportunity to tour the special room at the time of opening. There was a room where you could look down on the city of Osaka while taking a bath.
Buddhist Experience
I experienced ringing the bell at 7am. Only the first eight people each day can participate.
The wooden striker used to strike the bell weighs 40 kg (88lbs). The monk taught me how to ring it properly. At first, shake it slightly to create a rebound, then hit it with force.
It is said that merchants in the past dreamed of doing business in a place where they could hear the sound of this bell.
Afterwards, services were held in the main hall from 8am. I sat in a chair and listened to the monk chanting the sutra. I went forward and offered incense.
The 28th of each month is the monthly memorial day for Shinran, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect. Because of this, it usually takes about 15 minutes, but on this day it took about 30 minutes.
Breakfast
I had breakfast at the restaurant on the 17th floor. I chose Japanese food, but there was also Western food available. The menu included rice, meat soup, natto (fermented soybeans), grilled salmon, homemade rolled omelet, roasted seaweed, pickles, and a small dessert. Juice and coffee were also included.
Other highlights
I went back to my room and checked out at 10am. Before leaving, I took a look at the view of the temple from above, something I don’t usually get to see.
On the first floor there was an area that introduced the temple, provided pamphlets, and sold merchandise. It was fun to stop by here too.
