Shukubo (temple stay)
Shorekiji Temple was founded in 942. It is located in Ayabe City in northern Kyoto Prefecture. The lodgings were opened in renovated 100-year-old detached buildings. Only one group per day can stay here.
I haven’t stayed there yet, but I did have a chance to hear the chief priest speak. The temple is located in a place surrounded by nature.
The guest rooms are beautiful Japanese-style rooms. There is a bath, toilet and washbasin.
Buddhist Experience
At Shorekiji Temple, popular activities include zazen in the bamboo forest and the experience of clearing your mind beneath a 600-year-old tree.
There are also activities such as copying sutras, water purification rituals, and goma prayers. There is a service in the morning that you can join.
There are also some unusual goshuin stamps that are made by drawing pictures with a spray bottle.
Cuisine made with plenty of local ingredients
The cuisine at Shorekiji Temple looks delicious. The head priest studies cooking with great enthusiasm. The rice, miso and vegetables used are locally sourced.
The dishes also include meat and fish. If you wish, you can also have vegetarian meals.
