Introduction to Shogoin-monzeki temple

Shogoin-monzeki (Kyoto) Grounds

Shogoin-Monzeki was founded in 1090 and is the head temple of the Honzan Shugendo sect. This temple preserves Shugendo, a syncretic religion that blends mountain religion and Buddhism.

Furthermore, the temple has long had strong ties with the Imperial family, and members of the Imperial family who have taken Buddhist vows have served as its chief priests.

Normally, only a small section of the temple grounds where the main hall is located is accessible to the public. However, a special exhibition is held every autumn, allowing visitors to view screen paintings, Buddhist statues, and items related to the Imperial family.
