This temple was founded around 1704-1711. Despite being close to Fushimi Inari Taisha, the setting was very quiet and relaxing.
After entering the temple grounds and passing along the overgrown approach, I found the main hall.
The principal image of Sakyamuni Buddha was enshrined here.
There was also a bamboo grove behind the main hall, where numerous stone Buddha statues were scattered about. These are the Five Hundred Arhats, disciples of Sakyamuni Buddha.
The Five Hundred Arhats are one of the temple’s most famous attractions and were designed by the 18th-century painter Ito Jakuchu. Each statue had such a rich expression that simply looking at them was a delight.
Please note that photography of the Five Hundred Arhat statues was prohibited.
Ito Jakuchu’s grave was also located within the temple grounds. I am very fond of Ito Jakuchu’s paintings, so I offered my prayers with great sincerity.
