Shukubo (shrine stay)
This shukubo is located within walking distance from the entrance of the approach to Mount Haguro, and so it is convenient for sightseeing. The building looks like a private inn but it is strictly a shrine building. A Torii shrine gate stands at the entrance. Across from it you will find the Shinto altar. The guest rooms are Japanese style rooms that are six tatami mats in size and are equipped with a TV set, an air conditioner, yukata robes, towels and toothbrushes. I had a comfortable stay. The ultrasonic large bath is very spacious and comfortable. I felt refreshed when I washed off the sweat after walking the 2446 stone stairs of Mount Haguro.
Dinner
I ate the meal in the hall. There was a tengu (a legendary long-nosed creature) face mask on a wall, which made me feel the world of Shugendo. Wild vegetables, vegetables seasoned with vinegar, tempura and sesame tofu, etc., were served. They were bland dishes, but I enjoyed them. A chestnut dumpling with sweet bean jam was served. It was soft and I liked it very much.
check out
On the next day, I had to leave the lodge early to climb Mt. Gassan. They prepared breakfast for me early so that I could be in time for the bus. Thus I safely left for Mount Gassan. I enjoyed staying at Sanko-in thanks to the warm personalities of the people there.
