Shukubo (shrine stay)

This shukubo is located alongside the approach near the mountain top of Mount Haguro. It was originally called Kezouin, but was rebuilt in 1697. Among the 30 shukubo lodgings that existed around the mountain in the Edo period, this is the only one left from the storm of the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji period. It is very important as a memorial where the mountain monks in those days lived. It has also rooms constructed in the Kyoto noble’s style, which was used to welcome the high personages from Kyoto.

I was impressed by the promenade of cedars, which was beyond my imagination. So, I was really happy to be able to stay at Saikan, which is located just beside the promenade. As old as it was, the building was well maintained with a beautiful garden. It was a little cold at night. At Saikan, the bath is open 24 hours a day. Yukata robes and a tea set are provided in the room. You can buy a towel from a vending machine located in the corridor.
