Introduction to Rokuharamitsuji temple

Rokuharamitsuji (Kyoto) Grounds

Rokuharamitsuji Temple was founded in 951. The founder of this temple, Kuya Shonin, was a monk who traveled around chanting “Namu Amida Butsu” and built roads and bridges in various places.

This temple is famous for its statue of Kuya Shonin. You can view it at the museum located on the temple grounds.

This statue has a unique appearance, with six Amida Buddhas (Amitabhas) emerging from its mouth. These represent the phrase “Namu Amida Butsu” chanted by Kuya Shonin. In Japanese, “Namu Amida Butsu” is written using six Chinese characters.

In addition, you can see many other Buddhist statues that are designated as important cultural properties.

Various ways of making wishes

At the entrance to the temple grounds, there is a spinning wheel that you turn three times while making a wish. It is said that if you pray for just one heartfelt wish here, it will come true.
