Introduction to Kumano-Nyakuoji-Jinja shrine

Kumano-Nyakuoji-Jinja (Kyoto) Worship hall

This shrine was founded in 1160 when Emperor Go-Shirakawa invited the deities from Kumano (Wakayama Prefecture) to be enshrined here.

There is a record that Ashikaga Yoshimasa held a cherry blossom viewing party in 1465. It was devastated during the Onin War (1467-1477), but was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

This deity uses crows as messengers. The plaque hanging above the worship hall is adorned with numerous drawings of crows.

Within the shrine grounds, there is a statue of Ebisu, who is worshipped by many people. This deity holds a fishing rod and a sea bream, and is believed to bring good fortune in business.
