About Koryuji temple

Koryuji temple (Kyoto) Main Hall

It is the oldest temple in Kyoto, established with a Buddhist statue presented by Prince Shotoku in 603 as its principal image.

That principal image is the statue of Miroku Bosatsu (Maitreya Bodhisattva), which was the first to be designated a National Treasure. The figure, depicted in a contemplative pose with the right hand resting against the cheek, is beautiful and popular among admirers of Buddhist statues.
