About Entsuji temple

This temple was originally a detached palace built by Emperor Go-Mizunoo in 1639. Later, in 1678 it became a Rinzai Zen temple, and in 1680 it became a temple dedicated to the prayers of Emperor Reigen.

The principal image, a statue of the Avalokitesvara, is said to be the work of Jocho.

The dry landscape garden in front of the guest hall is said to have been built in a location that offers the most beautiful view of Mount Hiei. You can enjoy the beauty of each season, from azaleas in spring, to autumn leaves in fall, and snowscapes in winter.

Photos and reviews of Entsuji Temple

Entsuji is a temple located in the northern part of Kyoto. I took a bus from in front of Kyoto Station to the Kokusai Kaikan Station bus stop, transferred buses there, and got off at the Nishihataeda (Entsuji-mae) bus stop. It took an hour and a half to get from Kyoto Station to Entsuji Temple.

There was also a spacious parking lot within the temple grounds.

After paying the admission fee at the entrance and entering the hall, I immediately arrived at a Japanese garden.

This garden is considered a prime example of a garden that incorporates borrowed scenery. The garden itself is not particularly large, but it felt truly magnificent because of the beautiful view of Mount Hieizan in the background.

There was seating available in front of the garden. I spent a leisurely time looking at it from various angles.
