Shukubo shrine stay

Gokui (Shrine)

This shukubo is the former Tokuzenin of Togakushi Shrine. It has a beautiful thatched roof noted as a Japanese cultural asset. I hear that it takes a lot of time and money to maintain this roof. “I’m running the shukubo in order to maintain this roof (and for my hobby, which is cars),” the shukubo owner said to me.

Togakushi soba (buckwheat noodles)

Gokui (Dinner)

This shukubo is famous for Togakushi soba (buckwheat noodles), which descended from the Edo period. They serve river fish, sashimi, mountain vegetables and tempura, etc. They are all abundant. They also served sake that had been dedicated to the gods. Of course, we cannot forget soba, their specialty. It is soft and readily goes down the throat. I enjoyed the taste.

They serve Sobagaki (soba dumplings) as well. I was encouraged to try buckwheat beer, which was a little acidic, but had an intriguing taste. Also, I tasted soba shochu liquor diluted with the water used to boil the soba noodles. It was truly all soba.

Guest room

Gokui (Guest room)

The guestrooms are equipped with a TV set, air conditioning, towels and yukata robes. Accommodation during summer time is limited to two parties a day. It was quiet and I was able to talk about various things with the shukubo staff. During the ski season, they serve a mixture of Japanese and western food. You can also eat buckwheat noodles at a reduced price at your request.
