Shimogamo Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. With features such as a National Treasure main hall and a vast forest, the site attracts many visitors who come to pray.
The Mitarashi Festival is held for about ten days around late July each year at the Mitarashi Pond within the precincts of Shimogamo Shrine.
This is a Shinto ritual based on the belief that dipping one’s feet into the pond to purify oneself during the change of seasons ensures good health and freedom from illness.
I visited Shimogamo Shrine on this day. The festival runs from 9:00 a.m., but I recommend visiting in the evening or at night when the atmosphere is at its best.
Many food stalls lined the approach path through the shrine’s forest, and the area was bustling with crowds of people.
The lanterns on the tower gate were lit.
I waited in line until I could enter the pond.
Along the way, I paid the 500-yen admission fee and received a candle.
I passed under the bridge and entered the pond.
The pond water was cold and felt very refreshing.
I lit the candle and made an offering.
After getting out of the pond, there was a place to wipe my feet.
Finally, I drank the sacred water.
