About Ejimasugiyama shrine
This is the site where Sugiyama Waichi (1610-1694) – an acupuncturist who treated the illness of the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi – built his residence after being granted a plot of land measuring approximately 12,000 square meters.
This shrine originated when he built a sanctuary on the land immediately to the west of his residence, as he was a devotee of Enoshima Shrine in Kanagawa Prefecture.
Subsequently, it gained a reputation among the common people as a place in Edo (Old name for Tokyo) where one could worship the Benzaiten (Sarasvati) of Enoshima, and it flourished with the patronage of the Shogunate.
Although it is currently a small shrine, the grounds house the Sugiyama Waichi Memorial Hall, where exhibits of historical materials are on display.
