Introduction to Himukai-daijingu shrine

This shrine was founded sometime between 450 and 487 AD. The deities are enshrined in the same style as those at Ise Grand Shrine, the most prestigious shrine in Japan. For this reason, in the past, people who couldn’t make the pilgrimage to Ise Grand Shrine would come here to pray.
Located in the mountains of Higashiyama, the approach to the shrine consists mostly of stairs. However, since it’s a little distance from the town, you can visit the shrine in complete peace and quiet.
Ise Grand Shrine has two locations where deities are enshrined: the Geku (Outer) Shrine and the Naiku (Inner) Shrine. Himukai-daijingu shrine, though small, also has two separate shrines.
As you climb the stairs leading up to the shrine, the first place you’ll reach is the Geku (Outer) Shrine.

And further inside is the Naiku (Inner) Shrine.

Further along, you will find a cave called Ama-no-Iwato. This is a place in Japanese mythology where the sun goddess (The deity enshrined in the Naiku (Inner) Shrine) is said to have hidden. It is said that if you pass through this and come out, your luck will improve.
