Introduction to Goo-jinja shrine

Goo-jinja Shrine enshrines Wake no Kiyomaro, who contributed to the construction of Kyoto in 794. Although he thwarted Dokyo’s plot to become emperor, he incurred Dokyo’s wrath and was exiled to what is now Kagoshima Prefecture.
It is said that he injured his leg during that incident and was unable to walk for a time, but was helped by a wild boar and could walk again.

For this reason, there are many boar statues and paintings on the shrine grounds.

Many people visit the shrine to pray for good health in their legs and lower back.

People also visit the shrine to pray for improvement in sports such as soccer and track and field.

The Ashikoshi (Healthy Legs and Lower Back) Festival, held on the 21st of every month at 3:00 PM, is open to everyone.
