Introduction to Miidera Temple
Mii-dera is an ancient temple with a history of over 1,300 years and is the head temple of the Tendaijimon sect. Within the spacious grounds are the national treasures Kondo and Kojoin, as well as the Important Cultural Properties Niomon Gate and three-story pagoda.
Shukubo (temple stay)
Although I didn’t stay overnight, I did attend the media preview at the opening. When I entered through the entrance, I found myself in a luxurious space.
What especially caught my eye were the guest rooms. There were low beds lined up in the Japanese-style room, and the garden could be seen from the window.
The kitchen was spacious and looked very easy to use.
The bath was made of cypress.
A statue of Acalanatha was enshrined in the altar.
A fulfilling Buddhist experience
Waqoo-Miidera offers a variety of Buddhist experiences. Zen meditation, copying sutras, copying Buddha images, and making prayer beads bracelets were introduced.
Buddhist vegetarian cuisine
Buddhist vegetarian cuisine was also on display. The menu includes yuba, imitation eel (Grilled yam), sesame tofu, fried foods, tofu, rice, soup, pickles, and more.
I was also shown around the Kojoin Guest Hall (National Treasure), which is usually closed to the public.
Although the lodging fees are high, the experience is truly fulfilling.
