Introduction to Amatsushinmeigu shrine
Amatsushinmeigu Shrine was founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1184. He is a famous military commander who founded the Kamakura Shogunate.
Shukubo (shrine stay)
Shukubo is located just across the road from the grounds of Amatsushinmeigu Shrine. This renovated house is now a lodging facility that only caters to one group per day.
When I checked in, the Shinto priest first showed me around the room and facilities. The first floor is the lounge, kitchen, toilet and bathroom, and the second floor is the guest rooms.
There were a total of four guest rooms, of which we stayed in two. One room has tatami mats and the other room has wooden floors. Towels, bath towels and toothbrushes were provided.
The lounge on the first floor has two wooden tables and a large flat-screen TV. Wi-Fi is available. There are also many booklets and brochures with tourist information about the area.
The kitchen was equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, tableware, etc., which we were able to use freely.
The bathroom was a little larger than most home bathrooms, so I was able to stretch out my arms and legs and relax in it. There was also a washing machine and dryer.
Morning service
The next morning, we attended a shrine ceremony. It usually takes place between 6 and 7am, but the start time is not set. When we got there it had already started at 6am.
This made things a little hectic, but the shinto priest offered a prayer in the shrine’s worship hall, and I was able to pray with a refreshed feeling.
Information on Surrounding Areas
We had dinner at a nearby restaurant called Kashiwakura. Being in a fishing town, the fish dishes were delicious.
There are also convenience stores and restaurants in the vicinity.
In the summer, it is also possible to have a barbecue in front of the shukubo.
