About
This temple was founded during the Tencho era (824-834) by Chisen, a senior disciple of Kukai, as a subsidiary temple of Jingoji. Although it was once devastated by the ravages of war, it was restored by Myonin in 1602.
The current main hall was built in 1700 through a donation from Keishoin, the mother of the fifth Tokugawa shogun, Tsunayoshi.
The principal image, a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, is said to be the work of Unkei, a renowned Buddhist sculptor in Japanese history.
This mountain temple is set in a lush natural environment and displays its beauty with the changing seasons.
