Introduction to Yasugi-Kiyomizudera Temple

Yasugi-Kiyomizudera (Shimane)

Yasugi Kiyomizu-dera Temple was founded in 587. It is believed to be a temple that wards off bad luck. Within the temple grounds there are many buildings, including the main hall, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property, and the 33.3m (36.42 yd) tall three-story pagoda.

There is only one bus from Yasugi Station to Yasugi-Kiyomizudera Temple every two hours. If you are going by bus, it’s best to check the timetable. There is a parking lot, so you can go by car.

Shukubo (temple stay)

Shokinkan is located along the approach to Yasugi-Kiyomizudera Temple. It is a long-established store founded in 1869.

When I walked through the entrance, I was greeted by a lovely Japanese atmosphere. I haven’t stayed here yet, but I had the Buddhist vegetarian cuisine for lunch.

Syokinkan (Shimane) Entrance

I was shown to a calm Japanese-style room. A hanging scroll of a landscape painting was hanging in the Tokonoma (An Alcove in a Japanese style room).

After waiting for a while, the appetizer of walnuts, namafu (wheat gluten), sweet potato, konjac, shiitake mushrooms, and Japanese mustard rolls was brought out.

Next came mozuku seaweed, chawanmushi (Japanese steamed brothy custard), shiraae (mashed tofu salad), sesame tofu, and assorted vegetables and tofu.

Syokinkan (Shimane) Buddhist vegetarian cuisine

In Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, which does not use meat or fish, imitation dishes are often served.

The famous squid imitation was served. Yasugi Kiyomizudera Temple is famous for its imitation squid. It has a chewy texture and I ate it with wasabi and soy sauce.

There was also a imitation eel dish made from grated tofu, lotus root, and mountain yam, then grilled. When I put it in my mouth, a savory flavor spread throughout my mouth.

Finally, rice, soup, pickled radish, and pickles were served. Every dish was delicious and I was full.
