Shukubo (temple stay)
ShimizuDaishiji Temple was founded in 812 by Kobo Daishi.
The four rooms are connected and are quite spacious. There is a toilet and a sink in the room.
Some of the guest rooms even have mandala paintings on the ceiling.
Vegetarian cuisine
As for meals, you can choose from shojin vegetarian cuisine and dishes using local marine products. I had homemade vegetarian cuisine. The konjac and sesame tofu were delicious.
Ajikan meditation
I experienced Ajikan meditation in the main hall. I continued breathing for a while, calming my mind. Because it was a temple in the mountains, the sounds of the wind and the croaking of frogs echoed softly, and I felt my mind become clearer in a quiet, still way.
Morning memorial service
Morning services begin at 7am. Here, in the Daishido Hall, you can listen to the chief priest chanting the Heart Sutra while beating a drum.
Nearby attractions
Shimizu-Daishi-ji is located near Iwami Silver Mine and is registered as World Heritage Site. This temple commands a panoramic view of the Japan Sea below. At night, numerous lamp lights of fishing boats called “Isaribi” produce a really beautiful view. The silver produced in the Iwami Silver Mine was transferred by ships called Kitamaebune. You will be able to see Yunotsu port, from which such boats left anchor.
Although there is no hot spring water at the shukubo, there is a hot spring spot called Yunotsu Hot Spring where you can enjoy hot spring bathing in a public bath nearby.
You can swim in the sea in the summer. When it comes to beaches, Kotogahama beach, which is a nakisuna beach (sand that makes a sound like a bird singing when it is stepped on), is one of the few beaches along Japan Sea. If it is from the end of May to June, you can see fireflies in the area. They are Heike fireflies and are small, but the scene of the numerous fireflies dancing in the dark is truly beautiful.
