history

Soujiji-Soin (Main hall)

Souji-ji is an old temple of the Sodo sect which was opened in 1321. Together with Eihei-ji temple in Echizen, it enjoyed prosperity as the head temple of the Sodo sect. However, the majority of the cathedral was burned down by a fire in 1898. From that time on, the head temple was moved to Tsurumi in Yokohama City and this place was thus called Soin (original temple).

Then, in 1910, after the Hattou hall was rebuilt, the seven halls of the cathedral were rebuilt one after another and thus the temple recovered the magnificence of the former head temple.

Zazen training

You are able to receive instructions on zazen practice and eat shojin vegetarian cuisine. You can stay for zazen only up to two nights in principle.

The room we stayed in was a simple Japanese room.

Zazen practice around half an hour without accommodation is also available. Basically, reservations are necessary, but day-trip zazen practice may be accepted without a reservation (depending on the schedule of the temple). Zazen practice meetings are held from 19:00 to 20:30 on 3rd, 13th and 23rd every month.
