Introduction to Okazaki-jinja shrine

Okazaki-jinja (Kyoto) Rabbit

Okazaki-jinja Shrine was built in 794, the same year the city of Kyoto was founded. It is one of the shrines built around the four sides and is located on the east side.

In Japan, the east is said to be the direction of the rabbit. At that time, wild rabbits lived in this area. For this reason, at Okazaki-jinja Shrine, rabbits are considered to be messengers of the gods.

Rabbits are said to bring blessings for safe childbirth because they give birth to many young.

Rabbit Shrine

There were two rabbit statues in front of the main hall. The right one is said to bring success in love, and the left one is said to bring good fortune in money.

Nearby is a statue of a rabbit looking up at the sky. In Japan, it is said that a rabbit lives on the moon. This rabbit has the power of the moon filling her body.
