Introduction to Honryuji temple
Honryuji Temple is the head temple of the Shinmon-ryu branch of the Hokke sect. It was founded in 1488. The main hall and the founder’s hall are designated as important cultural properties.
Although many of the temple halls were destroyed in fires in 1653 and 1788, they were rebuilt. Furthermore, it survived the great fires that occurred in Kyoto in 1730 and 1788. For this reason, it came to be worshipped as the “temple that never burns” and the “fire-preventing Kishimojin (Hariti).”
