Shukubo (Shrine stay)

This is a shukubo located in front of the shrine town of Musashi-Mitake shrine. Here they offer instructions on takigyo, Sho performances, a kind of Japanese musical instrument, ascetic training and instructions on meditation and breathing methods.

Takigyo (Waterfall training)

When you join the takigyo plan, they provide you with takigyo practice twice: first from 15:00 on the first day and second one from 6:30 on the second day. The time required is less than two hours and it takes 60 minutes to travel in the mountain and the takigyo itself takes 30 minutes.

The takigyo manner practiced is the Shinto method and the preparation includes voice production, boat rowing motions and Shinto prayers, etc.

There was a dent in the rock where you can sit under the waterfall. The weight of water does not matter very much. The water falls at an angle rather than from right above, so even a woman may feel it less painful to be hit by this waterfall.

You practice takigyo three times. First, you have your back hit by water for 15 seconds to familiarize yourself and then, for 30 seconds the second time. The third time, you have yourself hit as if you are receiving the water.

From the top of your head to your stomach, you receive water, relax your shoulders and temporarily stop your voice. I find it difficult not to want the fresh feeling that can be felt afterward again.

The movements of the shukubo master, who helps the participants, are quick and light, which positively influences the participants. As you have to walk a mountain path, you should prepare a hat, gloves and sneakers.

The shukubo master is a calm and artistic person. When I participated, I did not see him scold or lecture anyone, rather he often praised the participants. I made applied for the takigyo plan, but meditation, sho performances by a priest, instruction on breathing methods, religious storytelling and crystal bowl experiences are also included in the plan, according to the shukubo staff.

Personally, I was impressed by the story of the shukubo master. I was very encouraged by his story of overcoming his clumsiness for life. The meals were also very good.
