Shukubo (temple stay)
Daisenji Temple was founded in 718. At its peak, it was a huge training center with over 100 temples.
Sanrakuso is a shukubo for Kanshoin Temple, one of the sub-temples of Daisenji Temple. It is located along the approach to the main hall of Daisenji Temple. This shukubo has a history of over 350 years.
The entrance was spacious and had lovely Japanese decorations.
I stayed in a relaxing Japanese-style room. The autumn leaves and sunset seen from the window were beautiful. The facilities were old but well maintained.
The bath was an artificial mineral hot spring. We had the place to ourselves and were able to relax.
Buddhist vegetarian cuisine featuring mushrooms
For dinner, we were shown to a private room with a view of the garden from the window.
The menu includes maitake mushroom and broth steamed, sesame tofu, tempura, steamed rice, clear soup, and black rice mochi with thickened sauce.
Since it was autumn, the meal consisted of Buddhist vegetarian cuisine centered around mushrooms. There were many types of mushrooms, some rare, which was very interesting. It was very delicious.
The breakfast was also delicious, carefully prepared Japanese food.
They also had original blend coffee.
Buddhist Experience
I copied the sutras at night. I placed paper on top of the example and traced it with a brush pen. There were pictures of Buddha and we were able to copy them.
Next to the sutra copying room is the main deity, Acalanatha.
Next to it was a hanging scroll for meditation.
