Shukubo (temple stay)
Fugen-in is a temple located in Oma, at the northernmost tip of Honshu, the tip of the Shimokita Peninsula. Within the temple grounds, which cover 10,000m2, there is a lodging facility that only accepts one group per day.
Once you pass through the entrance, you’ll find a 12-tatami Japanese-style room with two beds lined up. There is a toilet, a washbasin and a refrigerator.
There is also a room with glass sides where you can relax on the sofa while soaking up the sunlight.
I did zazen in an egg-shaped chair. I spent some quiet time there and my mind was at peace.
Dinner
Oma has a fishing port and is famous for its tuna. For dinner, we had tuna dishes such as sashimi and carpaccio. The octopus, squid, sea cucumber, rock seaweed, and abalone were also delicious.
Morning service
The next morning, services were held in the main hall from 7am. The Heart Sutra and other sutras were recited while beating a large drum. I also practiced zazen.
The monk is very young and will teach you zazen and copying sutras.
