Shukubo (temple stay)
Fukiji Temple is said to have been founded in 718. The main hall retains its ancient architectural style and is designated as a national treasure of Japan.
A seated statue of Amida Buddha is enshrined inside. This is also designated as an Important Cultural Property.
There is a shukubo called Fukinoto on the temple grounds. Guests can practice zen meditation and copy sutras. There is a hot spring, which is effective in relieving muscle pain and fatigue.
Buddhist vegetarian cuisine
I didn’t stay the night, but I had the buddhist vegetarian cuisine lunch. Once inside, I was shown to a dining area lined with tables and cushions.
The menu included soba noodles, soy pulp croquettes, simmered dishes, sesame tofu, soy pulp, vinegared dishes, rice, pickles, and oranges.
The handmade soba noodles were smooth and easy to swallow. The sesame tofu was springy and was eaten with wasabi and soy sauce. The bamboo shoots were fresh. The okara croquette had a slightly sweet taste. Each dish was very unique and delicious.
