Introduction to Taikoji Temple
Taikoji Temple was founded in the 8th century. The principal image is the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva (Sahasrabhuja). It is said to grant longevity and recovery from illness. It has also been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
It is also known as a temple of flowers, focusing on wisteria and hydrangeas.
Shukubo (temple stay)
It is located about a 10-minute walk from Futamigaura, famous for its Meoto Iwa (couple rocks). A youth hostel is run in the temple.
I stayed in a 6 tatami Japanese-style room. In front of the window was a small but relaxing garden.
I had dinner in the dining room. The menu includes rice, soup, shrimp tempura, cream croquette, potato salad, steamed egg custard, and pickles. I was able to have a second helping of rice.
There was only one bathroom, which was unisex. Curfew is 9pm and lights out is 10pm.
Breakfast started at 7:30 and consisted of a home-style meal of rice, miso soup, and rolled eggs.
