Shukubo (temple stay)
This shukubo is located in front of Zenkoji Temple, one of the largest temples in Nagano Prefecture. There is a statue of Daikokuten (Mahakala) holding a magic mallet standing in front of the entrance, which serves as a landmark.
I stayed in a 10 tatami Japanese-style room with a TV, air conditioning, and air purifier. Yukata, towels, toothbrushes, snacks, and coffee are provided. Wi-Fi is also available.
The bath was covered with tatami mats, which made quite an impression on me. The soft, fluffy feel on my feet is very comfortable, and I feel like my body is warmer than usual.
Shojin vegetarian cuisine
Dinner is shojin vegetarian cuisine. The menu included sesame tofu, tempura, simmered dishes, fried soba noodles with thickened sauce, and mushroom rice. Alcoholic drinks such as beer and sake can be ordered separately.
Red vessels can be stacked to create a compact space. They were originally used by monks for ease of carrying and storing.
After the meal, soft serve ice cream was served. It is sprinkled with buckwheat flour, giving it a crunchy texture. The aroma of soba wafted softly to the back of my nose, and it was a luxuriously delicious dish.
Morning service
The next morning, we were guided to the morning service held at the main hall of Zenkoji Temple.
When I went outside, it was still dark and the air was cool, making me feel refreshed. The souvenir shops along the approach to the shrine were closed, and there were very few people around, so it was very quiet.
As we entered the main hall, many monks were chanting sutras while beating large ritual implements. It was very powerful and overwhelming.
By the time we finished, it was completely light outside and we could see the head priest returning.
Breakfast
We returned to the Shukubo and had breakfast. I had been walking since before dawn so I was hungry and the food was delicious.
The staff at the shukubo were friendly and made the stay comfortable.
